Wild Muse is taking a short hiatus until the New Year. Matt and I are driving up to Minnesota tomorrow to spend the Holiday with the Norwegian side of his family. Seeing as how I’ve struggled to deal with winter in N.C., this ought to be interesting. (I grew up in the Sunshine State.) My biggest concern is driving on icy roads, so cross your fingers for our safe travels up to the great white north.
In the meantime, check out this newsy blog post I reported on for OnEarth.org’s magazine blog, Red Wolf Deaths Alarm Officials. And don’t forget to check the Charlotte Observer’s Sci-Tech pages Monday the 20th and the 27th for the last two science blogger Q&A columns of the year. These will also be the last two I will do for a while, as I’ve asked to pass the torch on to someone else. While I’ve immensely enjoyed the interactions over the past year of doing this column, I suspect readers would enjoy a different perspective in 2011 and I hope they get that if the column is continued.
Happy holidays, and happy new year to all!

I visited relatives in north Georgia over Christmas holiday. I did see a lot of road killed deer and a live one as well.
I counted 4 road-killed coyotes on a 5 hour drive from Augusta to Lafayette.
Some of them had reddish coats.
There’s a spot on highway 56 in Augusta where I frequently see road-killed coyotes.
The article about hunters killing red wolves prompted this response.
All of the hawks we spotted were alive and well; counting road killed animals depresses me. As an avid road cyclist, I see my fair share of snakes, foxes, turtles, squirrels, raccoons, possums, deer and birds with their heads squashed in and their guts strewn about… it’s not something I like to count.
